Dallas’ oldest film festival, now in its 38th year, is underway at the Angelika with screenings, Q&As with directors and stars, tributes to the semi-famous, and parties. While this guy is entertaining the audience tonight at The Reinactors, I’ll be in a nearby theater watching America Unchained, that rarity of rarities at film festivals: a comedy.

Actually, both of these documentaries appear aimed at the funny bone. Reinactors director Dave Markey will be on hand. South of Pico also screens simultaneously at 7 p.m., with director Ernst Gossner in attendance.

Through the weekend, the festival honors such luminaries as Rosemary’s Baby director William Frakes on Thursday, and Temple, Texas’ own Rip Torn (The Larry Sanders Show), here with his latest film, August, on Saturday.

Anybody catch French director Claude Lelouch on opening night Monday or last night’s festivities, including Texas filmmaker Eagle Pennell’s The Whole Shootin’ Match?
