Operating outside the mainstream can be a tough business. Just ask Chad Withers and Brendan Carroll, who are losing the west Denton space of their independent media store/music venue Strawberry Fields. They plan to move their subversive books, CDs, LPs, DVDs and other acronyms to the former offices of Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on E. Sycamore. What they won’t be bringing is the live music that’s become a regular part of the local D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) scene.

The shuttering follows similar comings-and-goings of indie spots like the Argo and Secret Headquarters, not to mention the late, great Forbidden Books in Exposition Park and Black Images Book Bazaar.

University of North Texas trombonist hits the road: Sara Jacovino of UNT’s celebrated One O’Clock Lab Band has landed a gig touring Germany and France with Sherrie Maricle and the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Sara also recently won two Downbeat magazine student-music awards.

Singer-songwriter slows down to care for her dog: South Side on Lamar fixture Kristy Kruger — she may have poured you a cup or favored you with a tune at Opening Bell Coffee — has suspended her 50-state tour and new album while her cocker spaniel Mojo, and her wallet, recover from an accident. Opening Bell hosts a benefit for Mojo on May 17.

  • It’ll be summer when Strawberry Fields closes. Time for the musicians to be busking on the sidewalk. Time to think of different venues for music. We are too often locked into certain accepted venues and forget that acoustic music can be played anywhere. New venues is an aspect of the art revolution.
Jason, the owner of the wonderful Forbidden Books and Videos, now runs a fun antique, collectibles, and more store in Lakewood called Curiosities
