Is North Korea finally opening up, ever so slightly? The New York Philharmonic recently made news by scheduling a tour performance in Pyongyang, that isolated nation’s capital. Now the New York Times reports that the North Korean government has decided to broadcast the performance live throughout the nation — a virtually unheard-of move.
The concert will be Tuesday evening, Korean time, in East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. Lorin Maazel will conduct music of Wagner, Dvorák and Gershwin. The rest of the world will get to hear it on a delayed basis. In Dallas, KERA-TV will carry it on Thursday, Feb. 28, with a repetition on Saturday.
