Undermain Theatre’s currently running world premiere of the Neil Young rock opera, Greendale, will play the 15th annual Ice Factory Festival in New York from July 23-26. The hipster gathering of edgy downtown work is not new to the Deep Ellum company. Undermain performed Coaticook at the 2000 festival, the first of its now regular forays to the theater capital.
Undermain, which adapted Young’s song cycle as a musical for the stage, is just one example of North Texas performers and playwrights getting noticed in other cities. Vicki Cheatwood and Tom Sime recently staged short plays in Austin. Their work also can be seen here, albeit sometimes at readings instead of full productions. Sime’s latest, My Favorite Animal, received a staged reading at Theatre Too! on Sunday.
Another local playwright is sticking close to home. Second Thought Theatre’s resident scribe, Stephen Walters, is wrapping up his latest production, Snake Eyes at the Mardi Gras Motel, this weekend.
