Art&Seek will sponsor a screening of the documentary Say My Name tonight at 5:30 at NorthPark. I posted a review of the film earlier this week over here. The film takes a look at women in hip-hop, and one of the things I point out in my review is that many of the bigger names you might expect to see are missing. I understand how that goes – you can’t always get everyone you’d like to speak with you to participate. So I asked the film’s director, Nirit Pele, about who she wanted to interview but couldn’t. And she was quick with a list of three: Salt and Pepa, Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill. The first two she played phone and e-mail tag with for a while before deciding she needed to move on. But she was able to set up a meeting with Hill. Shortly before that meeting Pele says that one of Hill’s handlers told her that when she met the star, she was not to shake her hand, she was not to look her in the eye and she was only to refer to her as “Ms. Hill.”
So that probably explains why she didn’t make it into the movie, either.
