Afternoon Delight is a daily diversion for when you’re just back from lunch, but not quite ready to get back to work. Check back tomorrow at 1 p.m. for another one.
Dutch artist Theo Jansen builds kinetic sculptures he calls “strandbeests” – ‘beach creatures.’ They’re wind-powered ‘walking skeletons’ that can leave their creator and wander off. The later models are even self-directed — they can work their way around obstacles. Someday, Jansen hopes to have small herds of these things trotting along the shore. (Ignore the ‘Wallace & Gromit’ tag on the video — they really have nothing to do with this except that Wallace’s Rube Goldberg-like devices can resemble these remarkable contraptions.)
